What should you look for in mattresses?
Mattress firmness is often indicated with an "H" followed by a number. The higher the number, the harder the mattress. Firmness levels aren't standardized, but H3 is often considered the standard firmness. Tip: Reversible mattresses with two different firmness levels offer more flexibility.
The rule of thumb is:
Soft H1 = up to 60 kg body weight
Normal H2 = 60 – 80 kg body weight
Standard H3 = 80 – 100 kg body weight
Hard H4 = from 100 kg body weight
Super Hard H 5 = from 130 kg body weight
Which mattress for whom?
The goal should be a straight spine when lying down! For adults, a mattress with different sleeping zones (e.g., 7 zones) may be beneficial. As a guide: lighter adults should use a soft mattress, while heavier adults should use a firm mattress. However, personal preference is crucial!
Innerspring or foam? A matter of taste!
There are now many different types of innerspring and foam mattresses. The quality is often comparable. Pay particular attention to your needs: Do you get cold easily or do you sweat more at night? Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? For people with allergies, a cold foam mattress, for example, is suitable. Pay particular attention to the manufacturer's instructions.
Mattresses for children?
- Babies/Toddlers: Firm mattress to avoid sinking and heat build-up
- Prefer foam mattress
- For children from 2 years: foam mattress without lying zones
- Children grow very quickly, so the mattress should be able to adapt well
- Children's mattresses should be tested for harmful substances
Topper: yes/no?
If your mattress is too hard or too soft, you can improve its comfort with a topper. A side effect: It protects your mattress. However, this should not be confused with a mattress pad, which protects your mattress from dirt.
