The gentle way to sleep
There isn't one bedtime routine that works for every child. It takes some time to find the best way to get to bed for your child. But there are good practices that have proven successful for decades. As parents, our main goal is to avoid tears when falling asleep and to gently guide the child to sleep.
A good tip that helped us as a family was to darken the rooms one by one with the child and say "good night" to each room. Finally, you and your child enter the bedroom, which is still bright and therefore seems welcoming. The child doesn't automatically associate this situation with sleep, and the room doesn't radiate a welcoming atmosphere.
Reading together or singing a lullaby is something special. Take time for the ritual and speak/sing calmly and quietly, keeping the lights as dim as possible.
The most beautiful bedtime ritual is cuddling together. Wind up a music box, dim the room, and stroke your baby gently and slowly. Especially for small children, the closeness of their parents has a very calming effect. Use cuddling together consciously to convey a sense of security and safety to your child.
Establish a distinction between day and night. If your baby wakes up during the night, speak softly and use as little light as possible. This should help them understand that night is for sleeping. You should start to calm down an hour before bedtime. Running around and making noise are no longer conducive. It's important to establish a bedtime routine.
For babies, background noises can have a sleep-promoting effect, for example, a hairdryer or the sound of water. Various apps can also be used to generate noise.
Of course, the bedtime story and song are also classics. Give your baby a feeling of security in bed; they shouldn't be cold or sweaty.
Not every bedtime ritual works for every child. Take your time to find your personal favorite ritual. If in doubt, don't let other people's opinions unsettle you!
We wish you a good night!
