Sleeping safely in the family bed with baby

Sleeping in a family bed is often better, as it's where our little ones, in particular, find closeness and security. As parents, we can respond more quickly to our children's needs. But what is important for safe sleep in a family bed?

Where does the baby sleep?

Research shows that babies sleep most securely in a family bed, especially when sleeping next to their mother. Studies show that mothers unconsciously adjust their sleep and sleeping position to suit their baby when it's sleeping next to them.

The "mother next to baby" combination is also very practical for breastfeeding. To reduce the risk of overheating, a baby should not sleep between two adults. The ideal ambient temperature for baby sleep is 16-18°C.

Which textiles for the baby?

Babies sleep safely on their backs in a sleeping bag, but without blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Danger of suffocation! Make sure your bedsheets are tucked tightly and tuck your blanket, for example, under your leg, so it doesn't slide around your baby.

Which mattresses?

Babies and toddlers sleep best on firm, flat mattresses to avoid sinking into the mattress and thus dangerous heat buildup. It's best to move old, soft mattresses to another sleeping area or replace them completely. You can also find mattresses in our shop.

Several children in the family bed?

It may be advisable not to let children sleep next to each other, as they tend to move around a lot at night. Instead, let them sleep next to an adult in their own sleeping area. For the baby's safety, children should not sleep next to a baby.

Fall protection?

Make sure your family bed is equipped with a safety barrier. This will prevent your child from falling out of bed or getting trapped between the bed and the wall. Safety barriers with matching covers are also available in our shop.

What else should be avoided?

  • Sleeping under the influence of mind-altering substances such as alcohol, strong medications, sleeping pills or drugs
  • In case of severe illness (acute or chronic) or severe exhaustion
  • Smoking in the bedroom, nicotine smell on clothes, skin & hair and on breath
  • Pets in bed when babies and toddlers sleep with them

Every family situation is different! Our tips for family bed safety are therefore non-binding and do not claim to be comprehensive. How you want to sleep in your family bed is up to you.

We wish you a safe and healthy sleep in the family bed!
