How do I know if my baby is too warm or too cold?
Thick jacket, hat or a light summer romper?
We often wonder what the best clothing is for a baby, because unfortunately, babies can't yet tell us whether they're too warm or too cold. They can't shiver or get goosebumps from the cold either. However, there are a few clues to help you figure this out.
It's best to place two fingers in the neckline of your baby's neck. If the skin on the neck is cold, he or she may be cold. If the skin there is warm and moist, the baby is too hot. A red head also indicates that he or she is too warm.
We must remember that babies get cold more quickly than adults. Their skin is thinner than adults' and therefore less protected from the cold. When babies feel uncomfortable because they are too hot or too cold, many express this by fussing or crying.
At night, the room temperature in the bedroom should not exceed 18° Celsius.
Children who are dressed too warmly catch colds much more quickly! Warm clothing and blankets in the stroller are important to keep your child from freezing, but they also shouldn't sweat!
Furthermore, care should be taken to ensure that the baby is protected from cold and drafts when changing diapers so that their body doesn't cool down too quickly. After birth, an infant has a surface area approximately three times larger than an adult's relative to their body volume. This surface area loses heat to the environment more quickly.
Even if you're unsure at first as new parents, you can rely on the fact that you'll gradually get to know your baby better and develop a routine. Often, your instincts will guide you in the right direction, because after a while, you simply know your baby best.
We wish you much success with our tips!
